'THE TREE OF LIBERTY MUST BE REFRESHED FROM TIME TO TIME WITH THE BLOOD OF PATRIOTS AND TYRANTS ALIKE...
IT IS IT'S NATURAL MANURE...'

'But out of this frightening and at first disturbing experience, the convicition great that A.A's had to hang together or die separately'.

'We alcoholics see that we must work together and hang together, else most of us will finally die alone'.

'My friend had emphasized the absolute necessity of demonstrating these principles in all my affairs. Particularly was it imperative to work with others as he had worked with me. Faith without works was dead, he said. And how appallingly true for the Alcholic'.

|...day 84/90 and as I struggle to head to that clubhouse, I've been engaged in meditation about our AA founding fathers, and their search for 'perfect unity'. I've heard it said by better men than I that while the AA Twelve Steps are conceived in God's glory, the AA Traditions are written in men's blood. I really don't know who made that up - I wish I had. But, I can say that In the few short years I've been coming to AA, I have learned a great many things; for me to say 'I still don't know how it works' would make me either falsely humble, a disease carrier, or a numbskull. Chapter Five tells us how it works - the Twelve Steps are a headlong assalut at God's feet for his mercy - and none that truly give themselves to this thing are turned away. In almost twenty years I have never seen anyone who has well and truly tried AA fail.
However, people fail in AA everyday; some drink, others kill themselves; still others go to jail in emotional blackouts. Why is this? You name it: indivuduality, lack of willingness, non-singleness of purpose, refusal to try to live by spiritual principles, dishonesy, etc. IF you are suffering from a disease that is 100% fatal while untreated (and alcholism is 100% fatal wile untreated), and virtually 100% survivable IF treated (12 Steps, 12 Traditions, 12 Concepts), then WHY would you try this any other way?
The price for individuality in AA is - DEATH. The price for uniqueness in AA is - DEATH. The price for 'taking what you need and leaving the rest' is - wait for it - DEATH. Unfortunately, the death is not always the offenders - usually it's the other guy, who is unable to hear the AA message due to another members selfish, self centered or just plain rude or oafish behavior.
In case you've not been told by your mommy, YOU ARE NOT the most important person in ANY room. We all are, for we shall have to live together, or surely we shall all die separately. The AA traditions were written in blood because for every tradition on that wall, thousands had to die. Is it necessary to propagate this madness? Is the blood of our founding fathers' not enough? Once in a while, both the violator of our traditions and the observer of our traditions alike have to die to drive home this salient point. As is often said - 'sometimes, two eyes have to close so a thousand can remain open'.
There is more to this thing than simply not drinking. If 'not drinking' is enough, perhaps your problem lay elsewhere.
