One Step Ain't it in Japan, Either...

Danshu-kai

This just in from a fellow warrior in Tokyo
(Big Book meeting in Rappongi):

"Konnichi wa, COG 1st Cl.:

There's a group over here called Danshu-kai. It's a temperance movement with steps but no spirituality. From what I've gathered thus far, it involves a lot of shaming. Currently there are about 5000 AA members in Japan, and about 10 000 Danshu-kai members. Whenever it's brought up in AA circles as a topic of conversation over here, it's laughed at, ridiculed etc. When it was mentioned the other day, I told them I'd love to see it in North America! That way, we would have somewhere for all the moderate/heavy drinkers who are currently in AA to go!

In treating REAL alcoholics, I'm confident Danshu-kai would fail miserably. They don't count sobriety, but rather the day they first join. So someone who joined 10 years ago but drinks every day has "seniority" over the guy who joined 5 years ago and has stayed sober for all 5 years.

Hmmm, sobriety doesn't matter, nor does God.....ahh, um, er what does? However, for those "just don't drink and go to meetings people"....it sounds right up their alley!

Whenever I meet a Japanese member/speaker who isn't interested in the book or the steps, I know what I'm gonna’ tell ‘em!

Stay in the trenches; you're needed there".

|...in case anybody is wondering, the text you see at the very top is Kanji for the word evil. Below, in keeping with our theme of ‘love is in the middle’, is the balancing Yin and Yang in Kanji, or Good versus Evil. But then again, my Japanese is so rusty; these may be directions to the rest room. But then again, if you’re awake, even the rest room can be enlightening.

  1. Way to go, COG. 'Bout time somebody said it.

Welcome as a witness to a fools journey out of the darkness. I welcome all tidings - you are all my teachers on this path toward a meaningful and purposeful sobriety.
